Born in Cold Lake, Alberta, on a rainy April day in 1992, Cara Goodwin is the daughter of a beautiful Cree mother and a doting military father. Her early years were shaped by movement across the plains: visits to her mother’s relations on reserve and months spent with her Kokum in British Columbia; a move to Oromocto, New Brunswick, at age eight, where she developed an East Coast sense of humour; and a relocation to Yellowknife at fifteen, where she lived until high school graduation.

After a year abroad in Australia at eighteen—where she briefly fancied herself a mysterious foreign waitress before finding work milking cows—Cara moved to Ottawa at nineteen for school. There, she became roommates with her future best friend and has built a chosen family of her own. Now thirty-four, and a proud member of Fort McMurray 468 First Nation, she is focused on deepening her connection to her Cree heritage and considering how to leave the planet in a better place for her nieces.

An Ottawa-based poet, her work has appeared in Bywords, flo. literary magazine, and Room. Over the past five years, she has received two Honourable Mentions for the John Newlove Award and was shortlisted for Room’s Annual Poetry Prize in 2023. In 2025 read as a featured performer for the Riverbed Reading Series, where her poems traced her ancestral roots across what is now called Canada. Cara holds a BA (Hons.) in Social Communications and has completed numerous writing diploma and certificate programs over the years.

He will be launching the chapbook Where there’s smoke, his sixth chapbook with above/ground press, after Six Songs for the Mammoth Steppe (2000), cuba A book (2005), In the Garden (sept series) (2011), Moan Coach (2013) and seam (2018).

Grant Wilkins is an occasional poet, printer and papermaker from Ottawa who has made a practice of doing strange things to other people’s words. He has degrees in History & Classical Civilization and in English, and he likes ink, metal, paper, letters, sounds and words, and combinations thereof.

He will be launching the chapbooks Poetic Constructions and The Baroness and her Ex Read Orgasmic Toast: To Whom It May Concern, his third and fourth chapbooks with above/ground press, after Reading The Great Classics Of Canlit through Book 5 of bpNichol’s The Martyrology (2022) and In Which Archibald Lampman / Translates Arthur Rimbaud (2023).

above/ground press 2023 #AWP (unofficial) offsite (virtual) readings : five days in March,

As part of the above/ground press thirtieth anniversary (oh, there are some cool things coming up later this year as part of this), I thought it would be both interesting and amusing to host a virtual (and unaffiliated) offsite reding as part of this year’s Association of Writers and Writing Programs annual Conference and Bookfair, which I did, across the five days of the conference over at the above/ground press site. While I’ve never actually attended myself (being unaffiliated with any organization that might assist with funds to attend such a thing), it does seem like a pretty cool destination. An Ottawa one would be nice; should they just host an Ottawa one? And across those five days, I began to ask myself: just how offsite is offsite? What does it mean, exactly? One suspects that, in the end, we all might discover that the true meaning of #AWP was actually inside of us this whole time.

To see the whole series of participating videos, either link on the individual days’ posts via the above/ground press site, or even head over to the YouTube channel, which also includes more than one hundred videos of poets reading as part of the ‘virtual reading series’ via periodicities: a journal of poetry and poetics. Thanks to everyone who participated!

DAY TWO: Jessi MacEachern, Jason Heroux, William Vallières, Lindsey Webb + Julia Drescher,

there are still new publications attempting to emerge through the crisis, which means I'm actually having to figure out actual computer-design, instead of the usual scissors-and-tape variety (okay, that's not at all true; so far, natalie hanna has designed a publication, and Christine McNair has designed another), but some titles will just have to wait until my print-shop opens properly. we will emerge from this! gah! but until then:
