author bios:

David Lee was born and raised in Mission, BC. Upon finishing English studies at UBC, he moved to Toronto where he worked for the jazz magazineCoda and with his wife, Maureen Cochrane, ran the publishing house Nightwood Editions. He also studied double bass and became active in Toronto's avant-garde theatre, dance and multi-media performances, as well as touring internationally and recording with the Bill Smith Ensemble. Lee's instrumental work can be heard on reissued Boxholder CDs with Leo Smith (Rastafari) and Joe McPhee (Visitation), and on a recent Static Airport Records CD with Kenny Baldwin (Row Boat to China). Moving back to the west coast, he played in community bands, co-founded the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival, wrote a Vancouver Island guidebook, and co-authored Stopping Time, the autobiography of jazz pianist Paul Bley. David Lee received his MA in Music Criticism from McMaster University in 2004 and currently lives with his family in Hamilton, Ontario.

Terry Carroll was raised on a farm in Elgin County, southern Ontario. He graduated from Trent University and has worked as a farm labourer, sodfarm manager, newspaper publisher in Alberta and Ontario as well as manager of a United Way office in Elgin. Currently a jack of all trades in St. Thomas, and a partner in a monthly publication where he also writes a column, Terry is the author of the mystery novel No Blood Relative (The Mercury Press,1995), shortlisted for an Arthur Ellis Award from the Crime Writers of Canada. Terry lives in St. Thomas with his wife, Nancy.

Carol Malyon's latest novel, The Migration of Butterflies, was published in the fall of 2004. Her other recent books are Colvilles People (poetry), The Adultery Handbook (novel), and Mixed-up Grandmas (a picture-book forchildren). Her other five publications include If I Knew Id Tell You (shortlisted for the Smithbooks/Books in Canada First Novel Award), short story collections, and poetry. She lives in Toronto.

Author of three poetry collections, American Standard/Canada Dry (2005),Torontology (2001), and dyslexicon (1999), Stephen Cain has been a literary editor at Queen Street Quarterly and a fiction editor at Insomniac Press. He lives in Toronto where he teaches at York University.

Jay MillAr's full-length books include The Ghosts of Jay MillAr (2000), Mycological Studies (2002), and False Maps for Other Creatures (2005). He is also the author of many privately published editions. Jay is the proprietor of Apollinaires Bookshoppe, an on-line store specializing inthe books that no one wants to buy, and also runs BookThug, an independent literary publishing house. He lives in Toronto with his wife Hazel and their two sons Reid and Cole.

Mobashar Qureshi was born in Nigeria in 1978. When he was a boy, his family moved to Karachi, and shortly after to Toronto, where he now resides. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Economics. He is currently at work on his second novel.
